What is EM Heat on Thermostat?
A thermostat is a device used to control and regulate the temperature of the central heating system. In the newer model of these devices, a new feature has been introduced, called EM heat. On normal mode, the furnace runs at normal, idle speed and tries to maintain the house’s temperature. If there is a lot of cold outside and the boiler does not maintain the inner temperature at a normal setting, you can turn on the EM heat mode. The EM heat meaning is “Emergency Heat.” When this feature is turned on, the furnace runs on full blast and will heat the home quickly. Nevertheless, if you are using this feature, keep the bills in mind because if your furnace is electric, the electricity bill will skyrocket.

EM heat means Emergency Heat. This is a special feature which was added by a company named Honeywell. They are the biggest thermostat and likewise device manufacturer. At first, the feature was not present in the thermostats so, whenever cold increased in the winters, you would have to wait for the heater to heat the space slowly. Nevertheless, now, you can turn the knob to the EM heat option, and your space will be warm in just minutes at the expense of increased bills.
EM heat Honeywell thermostats are created by honey well. It is one of the biggest thermostat-making companies. They manufacture all types of thermostats. At first, the thermostat did not have any special features in them. There was just a knob which you used to turn to change the temperature. However, they have introduced advanced technologies in this field. They have put touch screens on their device. They have WiFi capabilities. They also introduced the EM heat feature. In short, if you ever consider buying a thermostat. Then buy it from Honeywell.
The EM heat option can feel like a life savior in the cold. Nevertheless, if you keep it on for a long time, then there is a serious threat that comes with it. Electricity has some resistance to it. It is the principle that is used by the furnace to make the house warm. The resistance in the wires makes them hot. If you pull a lot of current from a single wire, then there is a high chance that the wires will heat up. The heating up is not a small issue. When the wires heat up, this is an indication that you are putting an accusive load on it. If you feel the wire is a bit warm, you should immediately decrease the load or change the wire. So, the same thing happens with the furnace as well. When the furnace is running on full blast, then it consumes a lot of currents. It can cause the wires to heat up, melt, and start a fire.
The difference between heat and EM heat is not too much. It is just the same thing happening at twice the speed. The EM heat setting on the thermostat is there so that you can run the furnace at full blast for a short period of time. When the thermostat is on heat, the furnace is running or idle and is working just like a water heater. It tries to keep the temperature of the environment in an idle state. It cannot increase the temperature of the space because of power limitation, but it can keep it at one place very efficiently and without much power consumption. However, as soon as the knob is turned towards the EM heat option. The furnace senses that it needs to run on full blast. If you have an electric furnace, then the heater’s coils will turn red hot to keep the air warm. If you have a gas heater, then you will see big flams burning under that tank. However, keep in mind thermostat EM heat option can be used every time, but it will increase the electricity bill.
If you have a gas boiler, then don’t feel so safe. Wires are not the only things that can be overloaded. The problem with boilers is that when they are overloaded, they can blast.Boilers are just like pressure cookers. They build up pressure inside them to increase the boiling point of water and cook the food faster. The boiler uses the same thing to increase the temperature of the water. That is why the boiler heats the home faster. However, when the EM heat is used with a boiler, then the boiler can overload easily. The steam needs to be continuously released. The boiler will blast with a very loud thud if the pressure is more than the nozzle can release.

Both of them have been explained no the point is that which one is better? For that, our opinion Is that the EM heat option should only be used when necessary and should not be used for long periods of time. If your house is a bit cold, then wait for some time. The normal heat will make your house warm with time. Nevertheless, moving to the EM heat option is quite risky and very expensive. So, the choice is yours. If you want to take the risk and have enough money in the bank, then go for the EM option; otherwise, stick with the normal one.
