As fuel prices skyrocket across Europe due to the crisis, Russia is already burning huge amounts of natural gas. |
A Russian gas field near the Finnish border is burning 4.34 million cubic feet of gas worth an average of $10 million per day, energy research firm Rystad Energy said. News from CNN.
Experts say that this gas was earlier exported to Germany. Germany's ambassador to the UK says Russia is burning the gas because it can't sell it anywhere.
Scientists have expressed concern that the huge amount of carbon dioxide released by gas burning is increasing the adverse effects of climate change.
The gas comes from the Portovaya liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant northwest of St. Petersburg, Russia.
