The Current Situation Regarding Gun Crimes

It is natural to be protective regarding personal safety and use all possible methods to guarantee security. In spite of popular opinion that the number of gun crimes has dropped, the statistics keeps demonstrating the opposite. This paper is about to show the difference between the amount of gun crimes committed currently and two decades ago. Additionally, the essay will support the statement of the society’s responsibility and necessity of gun control.
Certainly, the last two decades, namely 1993 - 2011, prove that the rate of the gun murders has decreased in comparison with the past (CNN Staff, 2013). However, the number of gun sales has become higher. To support this statement, Nelson reminds that “around 9.1 million of the background checks - mandated by a 1993 gun control law and launched in 1998 - were performed in 1999, compared to 16.4 million performed in 2011” (2013). According to the Justice Department, 70% of all murders are still committed with handguns (“Gun Violence,” 2013). Guns are very popular as a tool of self-defense; nevertheless, they are the main reasons of killings and crimes.
There are two ways of reducing the number of crimes that involve this kind of weapon. The first one is to limit the cases of its legal usage through the implementation of corresponding laws. The second one is to improve criminal education and to explain the possible harm of handguns. It is obvious that if every second person had the permission for gun usage, the world would be a dangerous place to live in. The society must assess if it is safe to allow the handgun usage, and if this permission is going to make their life more or less risky. In order to improve public safety, guns’ usage has to be limited and prohibited by law; otherwise, the consequences might be harmful.
In conclusion, the paper reflects the opinion regarding gun control issues and the number of murders and crimes that involve handguns. It also contains arguments against legal gun usage for the reason that it is dangerous and leads to unsafe environment.
