There is, of course buy WoTLK Gold, a way to keep characters from both versions the game for a price. Blizzard has launched the option of character cloning (previously $35. now decreased to $15 after a player complained) which allows players to own two copies for the character they want to keep.
The Burning Crusade Classic pre-patch period is significantly shorter than players expected. Blizzard has announced during its BlizzConline event in January that players would be able to level up new characters, specifically new Blood Elf and Draenei characters before the official launch of the expansion.
Most players assumed this was going to be a four-week pre-patch. That's typically the case with pre-patch's across WoW's numerous expansions over the years. But there's a problem with that. The Burning Crusade Classic pre-patch will be only two weeks long which is causing a lot of frustration to some players who feel they'll be unable to find the 100+ hours needed to level up a character within the two week time limit. It is possible to continue to level when the expansion launches on June 1. but they'll begin considerably behind players who are already at level 60 and are ready to go.
It's worth noting that the original Burning Crusade pre-patch way back in 2006 ran for six weeks, but did not include the ability to level to Blood Elf as well as Draenei characters. It was only added after the official launch of the expansion in January of 2007 buy WoW WoTLK Classic Gold.
