Connors is also a two-time Tennis Player of the Year award winner, and was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1992.

Arthur Ashe, one of the most accomplished athletes in history and an African American pioneer, was a tennis champion for over twenty years. He won four titles at Wimbledon and three at the US Open, and he was also a member of the US Davis Cup team that won the cup twice. Ashe is also remembered for his humanitarian work, notably founding The Arthur Ashe Foundation in 1984 to help fight HIV/AIDS. He died in 1993 at the age of 47 from AIDS-related complications.

Billie Jean King

Billie Jean King is the most decorated female athlete in history, with 18 Grand Slam singles titles and six Wimbledon championships to her name. She also holds the record for the most singles titles won by a woman, male or female.

Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on January 26, 1942, King was introduced to tennis at an early age by her father. A natural talent, she quickly rose through the ranks and became one of the best players in America. In 1959 she won her first professional title at the Charleston Open and went on to win 12 more tournaments that year.

King’s breakthrough season came in 1960 when she won all four major singles tournaments – the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, Australian Open and French Open – en route to becoming only the second woman ever to win a Grand Slam tournament (the other being Margaret Court). She also became world number one for the first time.

In 1961 King turned professional and embarked on a dominant career that would see her win another six Grand Slam singles titles and 23 additional tournaments overall. Her success continued into the 1970s with nine more Wimbledon championships (seven consecutively) and 11 more U.S. Open crowns (a record). At the age of 37 she became the oldest player ever to win a Grand Slam tournament when she triumphed at Wimbledon in 1976.
