How to use diamond tester
Moissanite is a manmade stone (it doesn't exist in nature in a form that can be cut into gemstones*). It was 'invented' in the 1990s, its only significance is that it registers 'diamond' on standard diamond testers. Moissanite does, to the non-expert, look remarkably like diamond - but it is not diamond it is Moissanite, i.e. Moissanite is not a 'type' of diamond, it is another stone altogether.
A multi-tester combines the heat conductivity test of a diamond tester with the electrical conductivity test of a moissanite tester in a single test instrument.
Since most diamond multi-testers work this way, how do you shop for a diamond tester? One critical feature to look for is whether the multi-tester will warn you if you are touching a metal prong instead of a gemstone. This is important because a metal prong will register as diamond on most diamond testers that lack a metal warning.
Moissanite testers work by measuring electrical conductivity through the stone*. Diamond is not electrically conductive, most Moissanite is. However, there is a very rare type of diamond which has an unusual atomic structure (it contains boron instead of the nitrogen) and this makes the diamond electrically conductive, i.e. it will register 'Moissanite' on a diamond tester.
Diamond testes are probably the most accurate and reliable tools to check the authenticity of a diamond. However, it is worth mentioning that electrical conductivity diamond testers and multi-testers are much better than thermal conductivity testers. Although they are higher in price, they are much more accurate.
How Does A Diamond Tester Work?
A diamond tester uses a heated needle tip to cause heat transference when placed on the stone. This is based on the tester's principle of operation, where different gemstones have varying degrees of chemical structure that allow them to conduct heat and electricity inversely. When testing, the tip is placed on the diamond, allowing the heat to pass through the diamond.
