Mahram word is raised from the word Haram, which means something illegal. Mahram in Islamic Jurisprudence is a person with whom marriage is prohibited because of their close blood relationship or because they are related by marriage. The concept of Mahram is very important in Islam, he provides protection and guardianship to women. Women need shelter that men provide them, they also protect them from the wilderness of the world. What does the Holy Quran, say on this topic?

In the Holy Quran there is no specific verse that describes a woman should be in the company of her Mahram when she leaves home. Surah an-Nisa only describes those with whom marriages are not allowed.

According to Hadith:

Abu Hurairah narrated that Hazrat Muhammad SAW said it is not permissible for a Muslim woman to make a journey of one day and night without a mahram.

In the second Hadith Ibn Abbas states that Hazrat Muhammad SAW said except in the presence of her mahram, no man should be alone with a woman. 

Women during the time of the prophet traveled without a companion for example Hazrat Umar allowed the wives of holy Muhammad to perform Hajj he sent two persons with them as escorts. Hazrat Ayesha and the other wives of Hazrat Muhammad SAW traveled from Makkah to Madina without Mahram.

Can a woman travel to Hajj or Umrah without Mahram:

This is a basic principle of pilgrimage that a woman cannot perform Umrah without a Mahram. So if she wishes to perform Hajj or Umrah she must travel with her mahram.
